Study of the "new romanticism," a belief in man's innate goodness and perfectability and its bearing upon the place of the humanities, especially literature, in modern higher education. The idea of man as a vile brute to be humanized, as an empty vessel to be filled with humanity, is being replaced with a concept of man as an energy field, as profoundly expressive and potently creative when he is permitted to give expression to his human impulses in activity and learning. Study explores impact of recent psychological trends--Carl Roger's client-centered therapy, the self-actualizing school of Abraham Mazlow, Esalen sensitivity training--and the implication of Marshall McLuhan's media theories.
