Study of Russian literature and criticism. Fellow's previous work has been in medieval literature, applying modern critical methods, particularly those which focus on the imagination. Deals with fundamental notions of reality which underlay both the literary works and the intellectual thought of the period. For fellow's study of medieval imagination fellow needs additional training in formal criticism of language and in sociological criticism, both of which are best represented in Russian literature, which he will study under this grant.
