Chronicle and critique of English and American writing in the 1960s to determine the validity of this writing as a response to the historical experience of our time and to reach judgements about which writers and which books are likely to last. Despite the bewildering variety and contrariety which have characterized English and American literary activity in the 1960s, we have much to learn from these writers about the national present and future.
