To study the physical and symbolic forms of civic institutions in Italy from 1300 to 1600. Included in the study is the evolution and development of specific forms to express certain building types--such as town halls, universities, hospitals, commercial establishments--and their symbolic contents. The study will focus on the requirements of these specific institutions and their meanings in one Renaissance city--Bologna.
