John W. Blassingame (Project Director: September 1972 to present)

To permit the study of Black images of the city from 1900 to 1970 in order to understand how the urban environment in which most blacks live today has influenced them. Urbanization is seen as second only to slavery as an influence on blacks and thus an understanding of contemporary social problems is possible only through an examination of how blacks have tried to cope with the urban environment.
