To complete a full study of the epigraphic and literary evidence relating to early Greek law: 1) to ascertain the social, economic, and political conditions existing in various Greek city-state that necessitated publication of the laws in written form; 2) to analyze the effects that the publication of the laws had upon various aspects of civic life--e.g. social mobility, politics and economic development. The value of such an approach to ancient history lies in the conscious application of the resulting knowledge to a better understanding to the social and legal problems confronting modern democratic states, particularly the USA.
