To study such aspects of law as necessary for full understanding of Japan's efforts to provide a Western-type legal system as a sine quo non of the revision of her unequal treaties. An in-depth study of both the cordial American-Japanese relations of late 19th century, and of the patient Japanese diplomacy of that period is an area of necessary study because of Japan's great impact on our Asian policy.
