To write a book studying the inner tensions of the papacy torn between the rigid "other-worldliness" in the world view of its own medieval past, and the critical humanistic spirit of the Renaissance, of which the papcy was a major patron, and which is a direct ancestor of the humanistic and scientific strains in modern civilization.
