The study will trace the development of the black missionary movement and its impact on black Americans and Africans since the eighteenth century. It will deal with the religious and cultural motivations for the missionary impulse in Africa and with the changing attitudes of white churches toward the use of black missionaries. Also the missionary role in creating a conscious awareness of Africa among black Christians in America will be explored.
