Applicant, a black humanist and specialist in Afro-American literature, hopes to advance alternative interpretations of American culture. to examine the strategic use of legend, rhetoric, ritual, and music and myth in novels published by Afro-Americans in the 1960s, applicant will analyze the nature of the black aesthetic movement in fiction. Will contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of the pluralistic nature of American life.
