To study eighteenth-century Spanish popular theatre so as to provide the basis for a more comprehensive understanding not only of the eighteenth-century theatre but also its culture. Three theatrical forms will be studied: the sainete, the entremes, and the zarzuela. The study will provide one of the foundations for a necessary reassessment of not only the Spanish civilization of the eighteenth century, but also contribute to the current reevaluation of our European cultural heritage.
