American Business Expansion Abroad in the 1920s

FAIN: FB-11341-72

University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, CA 94704-5940)
Richard M. Abrams (Project Director: July 1972 to present)

Purpose of the study is to determine precisely what expectations business leaders may have had of the U.S. goverment in shaping their overseas strategies. P.I. has studied American Business history, especially in the 1890-1930 period at Commerce Department and State Department Archives and Herbert Hoover papers in West Branch, Iowa, and found it makes at least as much sense to stress the pressure of political, nationalist, and even bureaucratic forces upon business strategies as it does to suggest the reverse. He intends to develop coursework on the subject at Berkeley, where currently there is none.
