To do original research studying the work of eight Negro teacher-critics who wrote between 1935 and 1960: Arna Bontemps, Benjamin Brawley, Sterling Brown, Mercer Cook, Arthur P. Davis, Saunders Redding. Their criticism and writings were influential in keeping alive literature written by Afro-Americans in a period before the present interest in Black literature.
