To examine the intrrelationship between social and institutional change, and the impact of war on social and institutional systems through an analysis of the manner in which the foreign and civil wars of the 16th and 17th century social and institutional development in Dauphine, a province on the southeastern border of France. The study is pertinent to any attempt to explain many of the rapid changes that have occurred in our own society during recent years.
