To examine the origins of the plantation system and the planter class in Virginia and South Carolina, and to trace the philosophy and contributions to American life made by these people. Specific aspects to be covered include: primogeniture and entail, extended indebtedness by planters, the concept of honor, and the relationship of the planter society to Negroes and other whites.
