To investigate the complex interaction of the arts in England between 1890 and 1920, primarily within the arts and crafts circles that formed themselves around the energy and genius fo Arnold Dolmetsch (1858-1940). Through reconstructing his relationship with major figures in the arts, reveal beneath the "decadent" surface of the 1890s one of its most important substratums of intellectual activity--the widespread attempt, under the influence and guidance of Dolmetsch to recover the "lost art," the alliance of poetry and music.
