The Art of Eastern India, 300-800

To determine the development of art in Eastern India from 300-800 A.D., a period about which little is known in the art historical sphere. This study will be carried out by means of inscriptional evidence, reports of early travelers, and most importantly, by examining sculptures in situ and recording such evidence. The significance of the study is two-fold: for the period 300-500 this will be the first attempt to establish the characterstics and development of East Indian art in relation to developments elsewhere in India, and of art anywhere in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent.
