To expand an investigation of Chinese literati painting in the Ming Dynasty (1480-1560), including T'ang Yin, a leading master of the 16th century. The study will deal with a history of his artistic development, a chronology of his works, a typing of the various styles and mutations in his hands, in an attempt to characterize T'ang's art and his response to antiquity in comparison with his contemporaries. The aim of such a study would be to reach a more exact definition of period style for the middle Ming and of the 16th century artist's own views. The need for a study of this nature in a Western language is a pressing one.
