Thomas A. Edison's Application of Scientifc and Technological Standards to Music and Musicians in his Phograph Company

To examine Edison's views on music and recording, working from the thesis that if music is measured by purely scientific-technological standards as Edison attempted to do, the results can run contrary to both humanistic and musical values. There will be three major sources for investigation: First, virtually the complete corporate body of files, correspondence, contracts and intra-company memos (including Edison's extensive comments on music and musicians.) Second, a nearly complete collection of the issued Diamond Dics as well as unreleased test pressing, all housed at the site. Third, the recollections of as many surviving Edison artists and personnel as the applicant and locate.
