To define the manner in which the Court, the aristocracy, and the small middle class of entrepreneurs and professional people affected Russian art, and especially to show how the Russian middle class was instrumental in the formation of a national school of art. The study will seek to discover the motivations of the patrons in supporting Russian art, and to describe the effect of their support.
