To carry out an historical study of the last 10 years' development in one aspect of the culture of cities: the design and creation of urban spaces reserved for pedestrians. This development, which has done much to restore quality and amenity to the historic core and to other commercial and residential areas of the many European and few American cities where it has been applied, holds great promise for the improvement of our living environment.
