To research and write a book entitled Artifacts of Urbanity: Images of London in the 18th Century which will explore the recurring metaphors for London, e.g. the beehive, the human body, found in major writers of the period, such as Mandeville, Defoe, Pope, Johnson, Blake, and Wordsworth. Also, material from journalism and social history will be incorporated into the study. The aim is to analyze the most important of these urban metaphors, and secondarily to offer an account of how metaphor functions in literature.
