To study 17th and 18th century history, political theory, and narrative satire by focusing on selected satiric narrative works in the period dealing with selected historical events, occurrences, or crises and examining and aspect of the nature of literary change by studying the literary response to historical change. Works include Butler's Hudibras, Marvell's Last Instructions to a Painter, Dryden's Absalom and Architophel, and Swift's Gulliver's Travels. The interdisciplinary nature of this study, i.e. uniting history and literary history, renders it significant to humanistic studies.
