The proposed study involved the technical examination of approximately one hundred signed and/or dated tempera panel painting from Florence and Siena to determine precisely the techniques followed by the individual masters. The examination would include an overall visual examination using a small hand lens supplemented by several photographic techniques. With a few exceptions no new adequate study of painting techniques has appeared. It is hoped that an investigation of Trecento tempera techniques might be a first step in a new direction.
