To study, through manuscript, archival, numismatic and art sources, one of the most powerful rulers of the Islamic-Mamluk dynasty of Egypt and Syria, Sultan Qayitbay, and his attempts to adopt the Mamluk-Islamic institutions to a series of severe economic, military and political pressures. The conclusions of this study will not only help to understand an important period in Islamic history, but a description of how certain institutions reacted to several forces causing decline will produce a pattern that could be applied to and compared with modern states which have had long traditions of military rule.
