To develop a technique for finding out the basic attitudes and aspiration of the French artisan class, emphasizing the elements that led them to fight in the so-called "bourgeois" revolution. To make the French Revolution understandable through a study of the feelings, sensibilities and culture of the people rather than through examination of the philosophies.
