To investigate 1) Parts of the theoretical welfare economic literature which bear on the adequacy of the consumer sovereignty standard; 2) The relative emphasis placed on consumer sovereignty and other desirable characterstics of societal welfare in the history of economic thought; and 3) An investigation of the thought of those non-economist, democratic thinkers who did not simply equate consumer sovereignty with democracy.
