The Midwestern Banks of Louis Sullivan

FAIN: FB-12336-74

Kenneth W. Severens
College of Charleston (Charleston, SC 29424-0001)

To study 8 midwestern banks of Louis Sullivan in terms of their architectural evolution and manifestations of the architect's writing on an American Architecutre. The study also investigates the context from which they emerged, political and economic climate of the town, and town planning. The study will interrelate the Sullivan banks with those of other midwestern architects of the first quarter of 20th century particularly Frank Lloyd Wright, Purcell and Elmslie. Since a most important contribution of American culture from the midwest has been in the field of archtiecture, such a study is essential for an understanding of this part of our heritage.
