Seminar will consist of projects in music of the15th and 16th centuries beginning with general historical and musical problems of the period. Materials from the Musicological Archives for Renaissance Manuscript Studies at Illinois will be the basis for the advanced stage of the seminar, which will consist of each participant's selecting a group of manuscripts from a specific chronological or geographic grouping, studying these from the points of view of repertory and musical style, transcribing selected compositions, preparing editions for performance, and actually performing some of the music. Object will be to move from general studies to a detailed study of a limited amount of material to determine how this music can best be brought to live performance today.
