Three Themes, Three Episodes in the Visual Arts of the Twentieth Century

Program will center in the investigation of three issues dominant in 20th century art and theory at three points in time. First cluster of seminars will examine the communitarian formalism which developed out of Cubism in the Futurist, Purist, di Stijl and Constructivist movement from 1915 to 1930; 2) the individualistic irrationalism of expressionist-surrealist counterforces from 1925-1940; 3) the twin concerns for object and environment as these have been especially manifest from 1955 to the present. Attempt will be made to demonstrate parallelism as well as differences among the three visual arts. Special emphasis will be given to sculpture and architecture because these two forms are sometimes neglected in the usual college under-
