Protrentlc Genre, and the Influences of the Isocratean-Aristolelian Polemic. To study Aristotle and Isocrates: sources of the fragments, history of the protreptic genre, and the influence of the Isocratean-Aristotelian polemic. Study will be done in three parts; (1) a re-examination of the fragments of Protrepticus which are found in a third century compilation; (2) the history of the protreptic genre, as it can be traced from Isocrates' own works through all the surviving protreptic writings; and, (3) the history of the Isocratean-Aristotelian polemic as far as it can be traced in surviving works.
