This will be a study of two key questions regarding the concept of "intentionality"—1) What is the nature of an intentional act? and 2) Is intentionality a species-specific characteristic of some category of activity? Though the approach will be problematic rather than historical, an attempt will be made to reach back beyond the writings of Brentano to find in his modern and medieval predecessors arguments still relevant to the discussions carried on today, the object being to gain a clear view of every side of the central issues and the possible solutions.
