Program of Intensive Reading To do intensive reading in the literature of the French structuralist movement, concentrating on key documents by Saussure, Jacobson, Levi- Strauss, Foucault, Lacan, Goldman, and on the most helpful works of their explicators and critics. Objectives will be to understand the premises and contributions of this criticism, to recognize its biases and limitations, and to consider its relationship to the Anglo-American criticism which Geoffrey Hartmen, Edwin Said, and Wallace Fowlie recognize as its counterpart.
