To study American autobiographies by women, which, except for Gertude Stein's autobiography, have been omitted from the reading list of principal texts. The study would parallel autobiographies by men, with the primary aim being an analysis of autobiographies of women to determine if there is a pattern of intention and sensibility and a genre of autobiography which differ from those written by men. To compare the tradition and/or pattern in women's autobiographies with the results of the study of autobiographies by men to determine whether or not they fit into similar or different strains in American literature.
