The seminar will model a variety of scholarly methods appropriate to the genre. These will include a comparative approach, close textual and structural analyses, a socio-political perspective, a psychological reading, and historical or topical emphasis. Weekly, two-hour seminars will be supplemented by consultations which will consist largely of discussions with some introductory lectures by the director and one by a well-known novelist. Each participant will contribute an oral report and a seminar paper. It is hoped that these papers will be utilized professionally. Resources and staff of the German Department of the University of Cincinnati will be made available.
