To study "Pre-World War I French Popular culture and Perceptions t of Social Darwinism". Research will be done on novels and plays that are beneath the realm of "high culture" as well as to popular newspapers and Journals. Study should provide an additional basis for evaluating standard generalizations about the importance of Social Darwinism before 1914. Research will result in formulation of certain statements about how Social Darwinism before 1914. Research will result in formulation of certain statements about how Social Darwinism in France differed from Social Darwinism in the United States, England, or Germany.
