FAIN: FB-12644-75

James B. Goode
University of Kentucky (Lexington, KY 40506-0001)

To examine the universal, humanistic elements in short American fiction and poetry with special attention to how these relate to the Appalachia student. The P.I. will begin by identifying the major short fiction writers and poets who deal with the Appalachian theme; Jesse Stuart, Wendell Berry, Harriet Simpson Arnow, James Steele, and Janice Holt Giles Next the aim will be to classify the various humanistic trends in their works. Then the P.I. will identify several major international short fiction writers and poets who deal with similar elements. Finally a comparison of these humanistic elements will be developed to demonstrate their importance to the Appalachian student.
