To secure a thorough understanding of the impact of anthropological theory upon American historical writing. To develop a non-traditiona1 American history survey course focusing upon the most significant social science related contributions in such areas as slavery, the family and urban studies. There would also be an in-depth study of the topic "The personal document as an instrument of anthropological sensibility."
