To explore the religious dimensions of the American Revolution. Religious experience has been manifest in different forms in different periods of American history and a cultural analysis will be a fruitful way of getting at whatever common currents may underlie otherwise apparently diverse phenomena. By investigating the documents and the histories of the Revolution, an understanding may be reached of the meaning of the American Revolution for a cultural history of America. The American Revolution was very much like a collective religious experience.
