To continue a study begun with my Ph.D. dissertation on the fragment of early Roman tragedy in an attempt to determine the nature of early Roman tragedy, its relation to its Greek sources and its place in the development of Roman literature, and the character of the Roman audience, who appear at first to have appreciated tragedy and later to have deserted it in favor of other forms of popular entertainment.
