To study the comparative impact of dissent on modernization in England and America. The questions of whether religious dissent resulted in more political, economic and educational diversity, whether the colonists made the most of the liberties available by England's 17th century revolutions and America's "free air," and what freedoms resulted from the coexistence of different religious, ideological and ethnic backgrounds.
