The Black Woman in Modern America: Myths and Realities

To explore the myths and realities of black women in modem American history. Three guiding questions will be: (1) what have social scientists said about black women, and how can we separate the valid from the mythical or rhetorical? (2) How is the black woman presented in movies, literature, and other media--both black and white? (3) What is the black woman's own reality as she expresses it in literature, media, or to social investigators?
