Political Radicalism and Artistic Avant-garde in the Bremen Revolution, 1918-1919

FAIN: FB-13156-77

William L. Bischoff
Newark Museum (Newark, NJ 07102-3109)

To study the relationship between "alienated" artists and intellectuals, and political radicalism in the Bremen Revolution 1918-1919. The major foci of the work will be the militant working-class "Bremer Linke" of Johannes Khief, and the bohemian/anarcho-Christian/ artistic, "Worpswede-Kreis” of Heinrich Vogeler. Also of interest would be affiliations of artists and intellectuals with political parties, the formation of pseudo-trade-union and pseudo-council organizations for geistige Arbeiter, and the correlation between "messianic Expressionism" and a misguided sympathy for the council republic.
