Urban Ethnology: Comparison and Transformations of Selected Southern Cities

To develop and utilize a comparative (or etic) approach in urban research in anthropology which will focus on the transformations and cultural identities of three urban communities in the American South. The project consists of three stages: (l) a survey of the literature in the field of urban anthropology for information on techniques of cross-urban comparisons; (2) an examination of the literature on urbanization in the South; (3) an in- depth examination of the literature on Atlanta, Miami, and Jacksonville using approaches accumulated in the first two stages.
