To continue writing a book on American women poets which suggest that there is a tradition for American women poets against which the experimentalists rebelled. It is a tradition based upon repeated themes such as the sanctuary motif (the longing for a safe, enclosed space) and also upon an attitude toward experience which is profoundly ambivalent, vacillating between unappeasable longing and renunciation.
