FAIN: FB-13268-77

Lawerence H. Madaras
Howard Community College (Columbia, MD 21044-3110)

To study the history of three Catholic parish churches in Bayonne, New Jersey from 1840-1940. The three parishes will be 1) Irish, 2) Slovak, and 3) residential or neighborhood of no particular ethnic variety. Study will view the parish church as mediator of the conflicting desires of its constituents to assimilate the new American culture while maintaining traditional ethnic values, will study the impact of the parishes on the city of Bayonne, and will consider the conflicts among the Catholic parishes themselves concerning ethnic rivalries and power struggles with the Diocesan hierarchy.
