The Concubine, the Princess, and the Teacher: Voices from the Ottoman Harem (Book)
Title: The Concubine, the Princess, and the Teacher: Voices from the Ottoman Harem
Author: Douglas Scott Brookes
Abstract: In this collection of translated memoirs, three women who lived in the Ottoman imperial harem in Istanbul between 1876 and 1924 offer a glimpse into the lives of Muslim palace women of differing social classes and ranks within the harem system of their era. The three memoirs offer a fuller and richer portrait of the Ottoman imperial harem than has ever before been available in English. The introduction and conclusion explain the Ottoman imperial harem system and the structure of the Ottoman imperial family, and set the memoirs in perspective with their time.
