The Collected Letters of Harriet Martineau aims to gather the extant correspondence written by Martineau which is at present held in approximately thirty separate collections, primarily throught the United States and Britain. Applicant seeks funding for gathering, collating, ordering, transcribing, and annotating these letters; for preparing volume one for publication; and for establishing the initial stages of production for subsequent volumes. The applicant proposes accomplishing this work during a sabbatical, from mid-December, 2003 through mid-August, 2004. Western Kentucky University has approved the sabbatical leave to accomplish this project.
