"Art, Museums, and Cultural Difference" explores the role of cultural politics in shaping the European/North American vision of art from Africa, Oceania, and Native America. Its principal focus is a major French museum devoted to these arts that will open in early 2006 under the direct sponsorship of President Jacques Chirac. Other recently opened museums that exhibit non-Western art, such as the Smithsonian's new Museum of the American Indian, are being used comparatively in discussion of such issues as state vs private support for the arts, cultural ownership, and exhibition strategies. Fieldwork is being conducted in both Paris and Overseas France during 2005-06. A book manuscript will be submitted for publication in December 2006.
