"Attracting the Heart" examines the lives, training, and experiences of child monastics in Sri Lanka through three interrelated dimensions of Buddhist monastic culture: monastic recruitment, monastic training, and the interactions between monks and lay people. Drawing heavily on informants' voices yet situating each voice within wider social contexts and other conversations with monastics, lay people, and parents of monastics, this study locates a place for the emotions and the heart in an experience of Buddhism while, at the same time, providing a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of child novices in contemporary Sri Lanka.
